A local criterion for Tverberg graphs

چکیده
The topological Tverberg theorem states that for any prime power q and continuous map from a (d+ 1)(q− 1)-simplex to Rd, there are q disjoint faces Fi of the simplex whose images intersect. It is possible to put conditions on which pairs of vertices of the simplex that are allowed to be in the same face Fi. A graph with the same vertex set as the simplex, and with two vertices adjacent if they should not be in the same Fi, is called a Tverberg graph if the topological Tverberg theorem still work. These graphs have been studied by Hell, Schöneborn and Ziegler, and it is known that disjoint unions of small paths, cycles, and complete graphs are Tverberg graphs. We find many new examples by establishing a local criterion for a graph to be Tverberg. An easily stated corollary of our main theorem is that if the maximal degree of a graph is D, and D(D + 1) < q, then it is a Tverberg graph. We state the affine versions of our results and also describe how they can be used to enumerate Tverberg partitions. ∗The author was a Miller Research Fellow 2009-2011 at UC Berkeley, and gratefully acknowledges support from the Adolph C. and Mary Sprague Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science. 1 ar X iv :1 00 2. 34 47 v2 [ m at h. Tverberg's theorem with constraints
We extend the topological Tverberg theorem in the following way: Pairs of points are forced to end up in different partition blocks. This leads to the concept of constraint graphs. In Tverberg’s theorem with constraints, we come up with a list of constraints graphs for the topological Tverberg theorem. The proof is based on connectivity results of chessboard-type complexes. Tverberg’s theorem w...

متن کاملGeneralized Friedland-Tverberg inequality: applications and extensions
We derive here the Friedland-Tverberg inequality for positive hyperbolic polynomials. This inequality is applied to give lower bounds for the number of matchings in r-regular bipartite graphs. It is shown that some of these bounds are asymptotically sharp. We improve the known lower bound for the three dimensional monomer-dimer entropy. We present Ryser-like formulas for computations of matchin...
متن کاملThe Topological Tverberg Theorem and winding numbers
The Topological Tverberg Theorem claims that any continuous map of a (q − 1)(d+ 1)simplex to R identifies points from q disjoint faces. (This has been proved for affine maps, for d ≤ 1, and if q is a prime power, but not yet in general.) The Topological Tverberg Theorem can be restricted to maps of the d-skeleton of the simplex. We further show that it is equivalent to a “Winding Number Conject...
متن کاملEliminating Higher-Multiplicity Intersections, I. A Whitney Trick for Tverberg-Type Problems
Motivated by topological Tverberg-type problems in topological combinatorics and by classical results about embeddings (maps without double points), we study the question whether a finite simplicial complex K can be mapped into R without triple, quadruple, or, more generally, r-fold points (image points with at least r distinct preimages), for a given multiplicity r ≥ 2. In particular, we are i...
